Alienor
Born in 1122, the remarkable Aliénor, Duchess of Aquitaine was Queen to two Kings and mother to three. Beautiful, intelligent, passionate, and rebellious, it was Aliénor who first brought fashion to Paris; shocking the dowdy, ultra conservative royal court there with her colorful, form fitting silk dresses and kohl-lined eyes. An early sponsor of the vernacular literary movement that would flower in the works of Chaucer and Shakespeare, she was likely the model for Guinivere when that character was added to the Arthurian legend in her lifetime. With a rock star instinct for drama, Aliénor dressed as a Greek Amazon to raise the single largest army for the Second Crusade and then led them all the way to the middle east. Alienor’s naturally flirtatious nature led to rumors of illicit affairs, most notably with the handsome Count Geoffrey of Anjou, whose son Henry she would later marry. She could be charming and she could be fierce. Her first marriage ended in anulment, the second in imprisonment, and she was excommunicated at least once. But the dynasty she founded would go on to rule England for more than 300 years, and many of the laws she enacted are still on the books today.
